Rendering

Rendering has been used to protect properties for at least 3000 years. The Romans rendered their homes, and even medieval castles were rendered. Before the Romans, Iron Age people rendered their roundhouses with a mud and dung mix. Everywhere we look, properties are rendered. And its as popular now as its ever been. Why ? Because good render works.

Rendering is cladding. But cladding isn't render. Render is a form of plaster for the outside of a property. In hot countries, timber cladding is more common. It can expand and contract with changes in heat, while protecting a property. Timber is less common here, because our damp climate would cause it to deteriorate too quickly. We use mineral based renders because they tend to last decades with minimal maintenance, and because the raw material are easy and cheap to find.

The most traditional forms of render have changed little over hundreds of years. They work well, and generations of renderers have seen no reason to change a winning formula. Applied correctly, render will last fifty years and more. Yes, they need regular maintenance, and will sometimes crack and crumble, but that's a small price to pay for such longevity.

In the last decade, that attitude has changed. Rendering has come into the 21st Century with the advent of dozens of new products, intended to create the perfect render. The addition of acrylics and silicones means render is now flexible and almost completely maintenance free. High-tech solutions to the old rendering drawbacks have revolutionised the business.

While many people still prefer the older rendering products, these new rendering solutions are very tempting. There is now a perfect render for your home, no matter what your requirements. Whatever texture, colour or finish you need, we can find an appropriate render for you .

So why does someone render a property ?

  • Rendering's primary purpose is to protect the property from weather damage, and the ingress of moisture. As properties age, brickwork becomes porous due to damage from the elements.
  • Rendering can transform the appearance of a property. A tired and worn exterior can suddenly become bright and sharp. Its like you have a new home.

When rendering is well chosen, and applied by a trained professional, it'll work wonders on your home. And when you come to sell, it'll add value to your property.

Which rendering product is best for me ?
There are a large number of rendering products available. Its a very crowded marketplace. It can be extremely confusing to make the right choice. But Plastering Liverpool have been rendering for decades. Give us a call, and lets work out whats best for your home.

So you know what we are talking about, here is a rundown of the products we have used most commonly.

Cement Render
Over the last hundred years, most properties rendered in the UK have used concrete. Its tough, durable and lasts for years.

Cement render is cheap to buy. It consists of sand, cement and lime, applied in a ratio of 6:1:1. Its mixed onsite, and applied in three layers. Coarser sand is used for the first layer, and fine sand for the top layer. The main expense is the labour

Cement render has great longevity, but it will crack over time, and need maintenance. Eventually, the cracks will result in pieces of render falling off, so it will eventually need to be renewed.

Lime Render
Lime render is probably the original render, brought with the Romans to the British Isles. There is certainly evidence of Roman Villas being rendered with lime plaster.

Lime is a great product. Its very eco-friendly and sustainable, which we all appreciate in this more enlightened age. Its main advantage over cement is its breathability. Most properties over 100 years old were designed to breathe, to allow moisture to move through the walls and prevent damp. Using a non-breathable render can be a disaster on older properties. At worst, it can require complete removal. So using lime render allows that moisture transfer to continue unabated. For that reason, its a great choice.

Lime is also flexible, It resists cracking very well. Interestingly it is also a natural fungicide. Fungus and mould cannot attach to it. It does require basic maintenance every 4-5 years, but will last decades when well applied.

Lime render is more difficult to work with than other renders, and this is its main drawback. It requires skill and experience, and we would never recommend its use by an amateur. Having said that, in the last decade some companies have introduced modern lime render hybrids, with the addition of polymers and plastics. These products, such as
K-Lime, now mean lime render is easier to use, and will surely mean it's found on more and more properties, and its benefits will be more widely available.

Polymer Render
Polymer renders are the new boys on the block. But they really are brilliant products. The polymer additions mean the render is highly flexible, which is the main issue with traditional cement render. Flexibility gives polymer renders great durability, and they are also maintenance free. They come in an infinite number of colours, so no painting will ever be needed. As a thick-coat render, they will crack eventually, but it will be many years down the line.

Acrylic Render
Acrylics are a form of plastic, with outstanding strength and durability. Acrylic renders are formulated using hairs of acrylic, which means they are highly flexible. They are known as thin-coat renders, because they are applied in thin layers. Their acrylic component means they will probably never crack, even after many years of exposure to the elements.

These products are 100% waterproof. They form an impenetrable barrier against moisture. Water literally runs off acrylic render, as if its been repelled. As such, they are not suitable for older properties, due to the breathability issues mentioned above. Acrylic render on a property needing to breathe would be a catastrophe.

Acrylic renders come coloured, and these colours are UV resistant, so will stay bright and clean for the lifetime of the product. Chosen well, acrylics are a fantastic option for your property.

K-Rend
K-Rend products are based around silicone . They are produced in the UK, and are extremely popular and versatile. They are probably the best selling rendering products in the country.

Silicone renders are flexible, tough and highly durable. Silicone is water repellent, so rain will literally be thrown off a silicone render. It requires no maintenance, and will last for several decades. Its often claimed that silicone renders don't crack, but all thick coat renders will crack one day. Its just many years down the line.

K-Rend manufacture a number of well thought out ranges, and are available in a large number of colours and finishes. There is definitely a perfect K-Rend product for your property.

K-Rend renders are professional products. They are not suitable for amateurs, and should only ever be applied by professional contractors.
